Local Culture + Climate
WISH LIST

We are fortunate and blessed in so many ways here at Gaia Grove.  The local culture is diverse and has many special attributes.  Our local area includes Gainesville, about 20 minutes away by car, which is a mid-size University town.  This drawns in many thousands of young, progressive folks interested in alternative culture and values.  There are cool coffeeshops, thrift stores, book stores, alternative health centers, etc abundantly.  There are great farmer's markets all around serving local organic produce like greens, citrus fruit, peaches, veggies, pecans, and much more.  Our immediate area has a "deep south" feel and is mostly agricultural and has a friendly, small-town vibe.  There are pockets of permaculture enthusiasts around.
Only three miles away is one of the USA's largest Hare Krishna farms with an inspired Sunday Kirtan service complete with amazing Indian food, extended families of Indian folk, and small farmer's market with low prices.  There is also a Unitarian Universalist church close by some of us go to, as well as many Christian venues.
We are surrounded by majestic pine forests and large evergreen live oak trees covered in hanging grey moss.  The vibe here is relaxed, warm, sunny, and fertile.  We enjoy amazing climate- very mild Winters with only two months or so of potentially freezing nights and warm days, and a very hot, humid, long summer with regular, sometimes daily rain showers.  Summer temperatures exceed 90 and 100 degrees regularly.  We receive a blessed 40-60 inches of rain a year.  This creates very promising and abundant growing conditions perfect for year-round production.  Fruits like citrus, persimmons, figs, blueberries, and grapes grow easily.  Although at times challenging, there is potential for very diverse permaculture growing!  We love our climate and are adapting to it's conditions.
