We are actively building a permaculture center in Central Florida. This involves hard work, risk and much creativity. Here's what we've done so far: -Carefully carved out a low-impact settlement on 92 secluded acres of pine forest. We have well water, a compost toilet and shower on site. There is land cleared for camping, RVs and a fire circle. The site utilizes small foot paths connected to infrastructure elements and a small parking lot to keep cars excluded. -Currently building a permaculture site on 5 acres of land in town. This includes building a veggie garden (around 60ft x 60ft), planting fruit trees, raising hens using permaculture techniques, building a greenhouse, well water, compost toilet and wood heating. There are plans under way for solar hot water, rain catchment, more garden and fruit trees, and possibly raising more animals. -Young fruit trees we currently have are Peach, Nectarine, Fig, Mulberry, Loquat, Citrus, Persimmon, Bananas, Feijoa (pineapple guava), Muscadine grape, Pear, prickly pear cactus, wild blueberry and wild blackberry. All except the Fig, Citrus and Loquat are at production size and have produced. We are hoping to gradually diversify and multiply the current orchard by at least 3x in the near future. Our soil is mostly sand
but improves quickly. The Summers can be uncomfortably hot and sticky
and challenging to grow food by Summer's peak in July. We are
experimenting with different techniques to produce diverse species of
veggies and fruit trees year round. -We are organizing local-community events to raise awareness about sustainability, education, and local culture.
-We are changing our eating habits to include more local organic food. This supports our health and local organic farmers. -We're currently starting a small business selling veggie and fruit plants. We're building a small greenhouse right now.
-We're propagating fruit trees and grapes. Here's what we'd like to do soon: -We're interested in forming small local businesses and/ or cottage industries to support the community. Current possibilities
are a health food coop/store, farmer's market booth selling local
crafts and homegrown produce, producing organic animal products (not meat),
carpentry/handyman work, mushroom cultivation and permaculture design.
We have commercial property including office space available for
ambitous people. -We want to construct rainwater catchment systems and improve our greywater system. -We're considering creating a pond or constructed wetlands. -We want to expand our orchards and gardens. Some things we'd like to
experiment with are kiwis, paw paw, hardy avocado, maypop, apple, and nut
trees including pecan and walnut. -We will soon be planting fruit trees at the 92 acre site and focusing more energy there. Updated February 14 2009
